Description

Photography Club is our after-school club that infuses the arts with the wilderness. It includes weekly after-school lessons in photography and monthly trips to discover and capture the wilderness. When: Every Tuesday starting on January 2, 2024 Time: 4:00 - 5:00 p.m. Where: Our new home! (503 Communipaw Ave, Jersey City, NJ 07304) More Info: Students will receive weekly lessons in photography from a photography instructor. They will learn how to use the aperture and shutter speed in specific situations, how to work with natural light, and what times of day create the most compelling images. They will also learn the nuances of composition, exposure and framing so they can take better pictures. Team Wilderness provides digital SLR cameras for students to share and learn how to use. The classes will take place in a classroom and some days may practice outside the center as well. They will be offered a minimum of 3 trips through the duration of the trimester. These trips are an opportunity to practice nature photography. This will present them with an opportunity to practice taking photographs of wildlife, flowers, and landscapes. During trips, they receive light meals. Students that remain dedicated to learning how to use the camera will have an opportunity to display prints of their work in a gallery at the end of the trimester. The gallery is part of JC Fridays. Presented by Art House Productions, JC Fridays features art events that take place in restaurants, galleries, stores, and event spaces in almost every neighborhood of Jersey City. Students will receive guidance in choosing the pictures they would like printed on canvas. They will be given a budget and have to select the size and cost of the print and the price they would like to list the print for sale. Their work will be sold and all profits will go directly to the student artist. At Team Wilderness’ most recent art gallery, the students earned nearly $800 through the sale of their works.

About Team Wilderness

Team Wilderness is a nonprofit organization that uses an experiential educational model to teach urban teenagers teamwork, leadership, and character. The organization helps to promote confidence in youth, consideration for their peers, passion for the world they live in, and resilience both as an individual and a group. Facing physical and social challenges, they learn to adapt and develop real-life problem-solving skills while at the same time overcoming fears and obstacles. Team Wilderness is the only wilderness experiential education organization offering programs focusing specifically on Hudson County's most underserved youth. Our programs are affordable for all income levels; since they cater to the youth from the community, they help positively impact the community itself. Team Wilderness allows youth to experience hiking, backpacking, and numerous outdoor activities during both single-day and overnight trips. These trips require the commitment and collaboration of the entire team. The students understand that and embrace it. The Team’s adult leaders and the trip experiences themselves, will cultivate reflection to unearth newfound self-confidence, undiscovered interests, and unexplored opportunities.
