Top five free at-home fitness activities for kids!

Health & Happiness

We all have things we wish to change in our lives. Many of us, in particular, wish to enjoy better health than we have in previous years. This is very understandable because good physical health improves your overall quality of life. It gives you the power to do more and stick around longer for your family. One of the best ways to improve your health is to move more, and April is National Move More Month!

You may be surprised to find that one in four people worldwide do not get enough physical activity a day, according to the World Health Organization. But really, in the modern age of convenience, it’s not that hard to imagine that people don’t get as much exercise as they should. This is why one of the most common New Year’s resolutions across the board is to exercise more.

You might think that lack of exercise is solely an adult problem. After all, aren’t kids always running around and creating chaos? Don’t they seem to have boundless energy? Well, not necessarily. Especially these days, when kids are often stuck indoors and rely more and more on electronic devices and screens for entertainment, kids don’t always get the exercise they need either!

So, while you try to motivate to get yourself to go to the gym this year, why not do your child a favor and motivate them to exercise as well? You’ll be happy you did. Regular exercise has enormous benefits for kids, just as it does for adults. Studies have shown that kids who get at least 60 minutes of exercise a day actually do better in school! And this is on top of all the more obvious perks of exercise, including stronger muscles and bones, a healthier heart, and reduce risk of diabetes and other health complications later in life.

But how, I hear you asking, am I to find a way to motivate my child to exercise without breaking the bank on sports classes, dance classes, gymnastics classes, or a host of other physical activities for kids? Well, if you’re looking for a quick and easy way to get your kids excited about exercise, check out these five fantastic physical activities your child can do at home with minimal supervision!

Read on to find out how to turn ordinary playing cards into tools to help your child develop their strength, stamina, and overall well-being.

Now that you’ve got the basics down, here are a couple of classic kids’ card games you can modify with your fitness cards. These cards can turn almost any game into a fun fitness activity for your kids with just a little creativity.

Go Fish— when a player successfully makes a pair, all players must complete the exercises on both cards. For example, if hearts are push-ups and diamonds are sit-ups, and the player asks, “Got any twos?” and matches the two of hearts with the two diamonds, all players must do two push-ups and two sit-ups.

Crazy 8’s or Old Maid— when a player wins by getting rid of a whole hand, then all other players must do all the exercises indicated by the cards remaining in their hand.

Jumping rope is a super fun fitness activity for kids that can be performed alone or in a group, indoors or outdoors. The versatility of this perennial toy is just amazing.

Jumping rope not only strengthens kids’ legs and gets their hearts pumping, improving overall cardiovascular health, it also improves gross motor planning and coordination.

Here are a few tips for sprucing up your jump rope game.

Play With Rhymes and Games Since the jump rope has been a popular toy for generations, many games and rhymes have been invented around its use. There are so many, in fact, that we can’t list them all here. But never fear! Head over to Kid Activities for a list of rhymes and games that will get you started!

Go Double Dutch

Twice the ropes, twice the workout! Plus, double Dutch turns jump-roping into a social activity, since you need at least three people to get started. If you’ve got an only child to entertain, this isn’t the solution for you. But, if you’ve got a handful in your household, this activity can ensure that all your kids get a chance to participate in an engaging fitness activity.

Dancing is a physical activity that kids learn to love at an early age. Even babies and toddlers feel the urge to move and groove their bodies to music. In fact, dancing is so entertaining that we seldom think of all the enriching physical benefits it provides. Or, when we do think of dance as exercise, we picture traditional, structured, dance classes full of kids in leotards and tights. But dance doesn’t have to look like that to be beneficial to your child!

Just jumping around and marching to the beat of their own drum at home can be a workout for body and mind alike. For more info on how to get a dance partygoing at your house, have a look at this article by The Spruce.
