Too often, when you hear the word salad your mind immediately goes to something that no kid wants to eat—that bland combination of greens, carrots, cucumbers, and other veggies. However, salads don’t have to be boring! In fact, these kid-friendly salad recipes from around the web will make it fun for your kids to add more vegetables to their diet this spring. They’re quick and easy for kids to make themselves, too!
How to Make Kid-Friendly Salads
Here are some basic steps to create a salad that kids will love to savor.
Begin with Your Greens of Choice
One thing to consider when you start making your salad is, to begin with some greens. Whether they are baby spinach or finely chopped iceberg lettuce, try not to expect kids to go gung-ho for them. It’s bound to be your kids’ least favorite component of the salad, but if you can coax them to eat at least some, it’s a win!
Add Some Protein
Suggestions include chicken, beans, eggs, salmon, chicken nuggets, fish sticks, and many, many more!
Shake it Up with Some Cheese
If your child likes and can consume dairy, you should absolutely add some cheese. There are many different varieties, such as shredded cheese, goat cheese crumbles, diced cheese, cheese curds, and any other cheese they prefer.
Give Natural Sweetness with Fruits If you add just a little sweetness, a salad can be made to taste even better. Try strawberries, grapes, apples, or pears, or try ncluding dried fruit such as cranberries or golden raisins.
Be Aware of Textures and Size
If your kid has trouble with large chunks like raw snap peas or cucumber slices, leave them out. Or, give him or her just one tiny bite of something else to make sure he or she can chew it well.
Deconstruct it!
This helps children eat salad by easily allowing them to see what’s on their plate. I recommend serving the ingredients deconstructed or separated on the plate to make it easy for them to eat them.
Finish it Off With Dressing
Serving the dressing as a dip in a separate container or as part of a meal on the side is usually best for kids.
