June is National Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Month. How do you get your kids to eat their fruits and vegetables? If you’re like most parents, you try various tactics to convince them that the healthy food they’re being served tastes better than their favorite snack foods. Good luck! But have you tried these five parenting hacks to get your kids to eat their vegetables? They’re easy, cost-effective, and really work! You’ll soon see your kids eating more healthily – and maybe even asking for seconds of their veggies!
Hide Them
Adding pureed veggies to soups, sauces, and even casserole dishes like mac and cheese is a great way to get reluctant kids to eat their veggies. However, this method doesn’t really change your kid’s attitude about veggies, so it’s only a temporary fix. However, for those nights when you just can’t have another argument, this parenting hack might just make dinner a little easier.
Try, Try Again
Persistence is key in getting kids to try their veggies. Some kids need to try new foods many, many, times to decide whether they like them. This doesn’t mean you need to bombard your kid with broccoli night after night until they finally submit. Give unpopular vegetables time between attempts and keep vegetables on a rotation to keep things fresh.
Set a Good Example
One of the best ways to get kids to pick up any good habit is to model it for them. When you get more veggies in your own diet, you set a good example for your kids while giving yourself the gift of better health. The impressions we make on our kids impact them for the rest of their lives, so if you want your kids to eat healthy for the rest of their lives, start now!
Try Something New
Kids may think of vegetables as bland and boring, but they probably haven’t seen half of the possibilities nature has to offer. Out of all the different colors, textures, and flavors of the vegetable kingdom, your child is bound to find something that strikes their interest. Try exotic vegetables from faraway places for a fun and tasty learning experience. Or try an unconventional way of cooking more commonplace veggies. Bake, sauté, fry, boil, dehydrate, steam, or just crunch on them raw! If they don’t like a certain vegetable one way, they might try it cooked another!
Make Salad the Main Course
It’s hard to get around eating veggies when they’re part of a main-course salad! Sure, your kid can try to pick around them, but making them part of the main dish makes it tricky. Dinner salads are a great way for any family to eat healthier, and The Spruce compiled a list of their favorite salads that kids will love, here!
