To say that kids love swimming in the summer would be an understatement; they love it so much that they’ll probably be begging to go to the pool every day this summer! This can get old fast, so here are five fun and easy swimming pool games for kids that will have them building their swimming skills and having tons of fun with the family at the same time.
Categories
With this game, the more people who play, the better (however, rounds have been played with only two players so work with what you’ve got). Play by choosing someone to be It. They will select a category that others know, such as colors for the smaller set or candy bars for the older kids. This player then stands in the swimming pool with their back to the water and the other players line up one after the other on the other side of the water, waiting for their selection to be guessed. When it is, they try to swim to the other side of the pool without being tagged out by the player who is It, who can turn around and swim after them if he hears them swimming!
Octopus
The goal is to be the last player unconnected to the human chain of outed participants. The game begins with one player who tags another player, who then links arms with them (hence the growing octopus). As an octopus grows, the amount of single players diminishes, and it becomes harder and harder to escape the web of players that constitute the octopus’s tentacles.
Underwater Tea Party
Goggles would be a nice item to bring to an underwater tea party where the players sit criss-cross-applesauce at the bottom of the pool and partake in an aristocratic tea fit for a queen. Serving each other imaginary tea, doling out imaginary sugar cubes, handing each other trays of finger foods and sweets - that’s all par for the course.
Popsicle
Like regular freeze tag on land, but in the pool! Begin with one person as “it” and the other players will then have to avoid being tagged by them. Players need to freeze when they are tagged until an untagged player can “thaw” them by swimming under the frozen player’s legs.
Funny Hair Contest
Everyone gets a laugh making their hair into wacky styles in the pool. If you’ve ever had long hair, you’ve also probably done what is colloquially called the George Washington- emerged from the water, with your hair trailing down in front of your face, then flipped it over your head in an attractive Colonial-era look. Among the other classics are the mohawk, Princess Leia, and the cinnamon roll (looped around on top of the head).
